Murray Winchester was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and worked as a banker before receiving his commission in March 1916 as a Lieutenant in the 220th York Rangers. Determined to reach the front as quickly as possible, he transferred to a Reserve Battalion for Officers, undergoing further taining at Shorncliffe and Crowboro. In January 1917 he was assigned to the 12th Reserve Battalion, which provided reinforcements to the 3rd and 75th Battalions. He arrived in France in March 1917 to join the 75th. He had only been two weeks in France when the Battle of Vimy Ridge began on 9 April 1917. Winchester was reported missing after the first day of fighting; although his death was not confirmed for another eight months and his body was never found, a fellow officer saw him fall, buried in the explosion of a shell. He is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial along with Harry Walker, another UTS alumnus.
